About Trewidden

Located on the stunning Lands End peninsular, just west of Penzance. Trewidden benefits from a mild, maritime climate, enabling a large collection of tender plants to be established. Started in the 1840’s by Edward Bolitho, Trewidden Garden has a rich horticultural and industrial past.

Experience the truly remarkable stand of tree ferns, set within ancient tin workings, said to be the finest in the Northern Hemisphere. Find Champion Magnolias, a venerable old Jelly Palm and an extensive collection of Camellias, Rhododendrons and Azaleas set within a mature woodland setting.

The Walled Garden has mixed borders to provide a riot of colour for the summer months, with ancient tin smelting kettles used as water features. Unusual, rare and exotic plants plus specimens new to cultivation provide a wide range of interest for visitors and garden enthusiasts alike.

The ‘Bothy’ Tearoom serves cream teas, light refreshments and has plant sales. Group visits and guided tours are available by prior arrangement.

FAQ’s

How old are the tree ferns?

They were planted just over a hundred years ago and some of them may have already been 20-50 years old when planted, so the largest ones could be 150 years old.

What is the fruit tree in the walled garden?

It is a Quince or Cydonia oblonga, we make quince jelly with the fruits which sells very well.

How many types of Magnolia trees do you have?

About 25 Species and about 20 different hybrids/ cultivated varieties. We also have numerous unnamed seedlings which are now of flowering age and most likely hybrids.

Who owns Trewidden Garden?

Alverne Bolitho, it is one of the few old historic gardens in Cornwall still wholly owned and run by the same family that created it all those years ago.
